When it comes to my job title, I am always a little hesitant. You see there are so many options.
I could be a dog walker, pet sitter, small business owner, entrepreneur, dog trainer, engagement specialist, play pal, blogger, adventure coordinator, companion, professional poop scooper, shit picker, marketer, website designer, or a would be author.
The truth is I’m all of them so it’s really hard to pick one but I do generally describe myself as a dog walker first and foremost.
But I’m thinking of changing that. I’ve given it a lot of thought you see.
When I’m out on my adventures I rarely just walk a dog. In fact it can become very tactical.
Depending on the dog, what happens on our adventures changes.
It could be that I’m taking out a working dog breed. Well they need a bit more than the average walk. Even if they are not ‘working’ they still have that instinct.
So my job becomes that of a distractor master. I need to make myself the ultimate fun machine that is way more exciting than that instinct telling them to chase that small furry thing or follow the scent of that pheasant.
If I’m walking a older dog or a dog with an injury then I become a gentle companion and underfoot expert. These dogs need a walk that won’t put pressure on to their joints or cause injury but at the same time provide gentle exercise.
If the dog is reactive then I become a ninja. I need to be able to implement a major escape plan from any possible trigger.
Although my main aim is to avoid any triggers so I will be on full surveillance mode. For me this works best being in an open field of fairly flat ground. That means I can see any triggers early on and change route.
But basically I like to think of myself as your dog’s bodyguard. The Doggy Bodyguard.
Why? Well just like the real life bodyguards I’m willing to do anything to keep your dog safe.
Yes I’ve put myself in the middle of two dogs fighting. Yes I make sure they walk on the inside when walking by a road (I will get hit first.)
I report anything suspicious to the police like the time I saw a group of men with a gun or drug selling going on whilst I was out walking.
Yes I make sure that not everyone is touching your dog. Yes I am at your dog’s beck and call.
The oxford dictionary describes a Bodyguard as the following:
“a person or group of people employed to escort and protect an important or famous person”
Well doesn’t that sound like me and your dog?
So I’m going to be presenting myself now as Sally from Woofers Walkies, The Doggy Bodyguard!
Love, Sally xx
